Tree and plant selections for the OGHC landscaping of have now been finalized. We can look forward to a spectacular site for both residents and passers-by to enjoy. Imagine more than 30 shade, evergreen and fruit trees, dozens of shrubs and hundreds of smaller plants, from roses to grape vines.
Our landscape architects, HTFC Planning & Design and our Site Committee have developed a beautiful, diverse, and environmentally sensitive approach to our street side and courtyard landscaping. It includes 31 trees (21 on the street side and 10 in the courtyard); 2 rain gardens (one at Preston and Arlington and one at Preston at Evanson); a rose garden; a peony garden; and a “vineyard” along the rear fence. You can learn more about the planned variety of trees and plants by clicking here.
We have enjoyed considerable success in fundraising for this project. So far, we have received a $1,000 grant from the City of Winnipeg City Centre Community Committee for trees and we are waiting to hear on the success of our application for $4,000 from Tree Canada.
We have begun offering our members an opportunity to sponsor one (or more) of the major plantings on and around our property (the total value of these items exceeds $20,000.) The early, informal stages of this campaign have been very successful: to date members have pledged $5,500.
By participating in our Landscaping Project, not only will you get the satisfaction of helping beautify your new home, but you can also give a memorable, green gift to someone you love. There are many ways you can contribute.
Be good to yourself and fellow co-op members.
Many of the members who are making donations have a special affection for a tree they will be leaving behind when they move to the co-op. It makes them happy to be contributing, knowing that their family and fellow co-op members will be able to enjoy the plantings they helped establish.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner.
Can you imagine how your mum, spouse, daughter, grandmother, sibling or old friend might feel if your Mother’s Day card indicated you sponsored an Old Grace tree in her name (to be planted in the fall)?
Christmas in June? Special birthday coming up?
By completing your tree sponsorship by the end of May, you can save your “living” gift for any upcoming occasion!
Make it a team effort.
Interested but can’t quite commit to the cost? Team up with friends, family members or other co-op members to make it happen! For example – maybe you and your siblings could chip in to sponsor a tree for Mother’s Day?
Let us choose for you.
You may prefer to make a general donation to our Trees and Plantings Fund.
In addition to the gratitude of our board members and the Site Committee, all donors and all gift recipients will be recognized on a special page on our website.
If the cost of the trees, gardens, and vineyard have not been covered by early June, we will open our campaign up to individuals and organizations in and around our community.
