Be safe in the kitchen
Smoke from over-heated pans is the #1 reason why fire alarms go off at Old Grace.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking food.
- Don’t cook while wearing clothes with loose sleeves.
- Always turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
- Use the back burners if children are around.
- Keep potholders and dishtowels away from the hot surfaces.
- If you have a grease fire:
- turn off the burner
- put a lid, large plate or cookie sheet over the flames
- let the covered pan cool down
- if the flames do not go out immediately, leave your suite, pull the fire alarm and call 911.
Be safe in your living room and bedroom
- Replace worn electrical cords or cracked plugs on your television, sound system, computer or appliances.
- Use power bars instead of plugging several appliances into one outlet.
- Do not run extension cords under rugs or between rooms.
- Make sure that humidifiers and space heaters are plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into an extension cord.
- Keep space heaters away from drapes or bedding. Turn the space heater off when you leave your suite or go to bed.
Be safe using candles
- Use candle holders that will not tip over.
- Keep candles out of reach of children.
- Do not leave candles burning when you go out of the room.
Be safe in your storage room / storage locker
- Your washer and dryer must be installed by an electrician.
- Clean the dryer lint trap after each load of clothes.
- If your washer or dryer stops working, it must be repaired by a trained technician.
- Keep materials that can start a fire out of your suite storage room. Examples are camping gas, propane tanks, spare gasoline cans, spray paint cans, wood varnish, turpentine or paint thinner. Do not take these materials to your basement storage locker.
Be safe on your balcony or porch
- Keep your barbeque away from the co-op building.
- Keep lighters and matches out of reach of children.
- Turn the propane tank off when you are finished cooking.
